Greta Leid received Union Canal Elementary School Student of the Year for the 2025-2026 school year in recognition of her achievements, character, and overall involvement in school activities.

“Greta exemplifies the very best of what it means to be a Union Canal Falcon,” said Principal Bernard McGinty during his presentation to the Cornwall-Lebanon School District Board of School Directors on Monday, Feb. 9. “She consistently demonstrates respect, responsibility, and hard work while quietly modeling humility, kindness, and leadership in a way that leaves a very lasting impact on our school community.”

As a student, Greta participated in chorus, orchestra, and art club. She also hosted “Good Morning, Union Canal,” the school’s morning announcements show. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys reading, drawing, creating projects, building Legos, learning and playing piano, and spending time with her friends and family. Greta also is actively involved in her church community.

In her remarks to the Board, Greta shared:

I’d like to thank Dr. McGinty and all of my teachers. It is an honor to be chosen as Student of the Year. Union Canal has always felt like home to me. All the teachers I have had are wonderful. I would also like to thank my mom, dad, and sister. They always make sure I do my best and help me become a better person … In the future, I will try new things … Thank you again for this honor. Union Canal is a great school, and I will miss it.
